@ophis@brain.worm.pink and historically it rooted in the origins of the english state, you need a stanarized systems of names to govern people, do private property, law etc. and most people only have last names because a crude beurocrat in a shed gave them a name when they first wrote their names on a piece of paper, so someone didn't have a last name, so they're like 'what's your father's name... John? So you're last name is Johnson" semi related but also why, for example, there are so many Chan's and Chang's in China. Mandarin's officials would just give everyone in a town / region / province *their* name, or their Master's name spanish surnames were given to Indios by the conquistador / landord, 'slave names' of the Masters etc. The Three name format is just very useful is generating localized uniqueness with limited number of names. *Thinking Like a State* goes into this quite a bit
