I've heard that China pays it's researchers for publishing, the opposite of our capitalist publishing cabal.

@NMBA@mstdn.ca Yes and no. What I hear from there is that practices have just recently started to change. What they used to do is pay authors for publishing in certain journals, i.e., an incentive to publish in certain places but not others. In particular, they were paid to poublish in highly ranked journals, likely contributing to the replication crisis: https://www.frontiersin.org/journals/human-neuroscience/articles/10.3389/fnhum.2018.00037/full That's one of the reasons the practice apparently is about to change.
