does anybody out there have any of those old 'gumstick computers'? the whole systems (tiny systems, anyhow) that plug directly into hdmi? im super curious if you can completely fake the device ID that the 'hdmi host' system gets. because if you CAN fake that ID - then .. yeah we're in full-on HDMI rubber duckie territory

@Viss@mastodon.social I think I still have an Intel HDMI gumstick around here, somewhere in the abandoned tech midden. If I find it, you are are welcome to it. IIRC, it came with Ubuntu installed, which filled almost the entire onboard flash.

@Viss@mastodon.social Oh and you can fake the EDID data, no gumstick computer required. Windows can do it with an INF file. EDIDs can be reprogrammed too. https://www.startpage.com/sp/search?query=reprogram+monitor+EDID&cat=web&pl=opensearch

@Viss@mastodon.social there are also dongles you can buy to spoof EDID data. Search for 'EDID Emulator'. To automagically pull down the driver you'd probably need to pass WHQL testing though?
