The New York Times has (somewhat belatedly) discovered that Google is an enemy of the open Internet. This is an important piece, because the Times still is an agenda-setter in journalism. https://www.nytimes.com/2026/07/20/technology/google-ai-open-web.html (Google spokes-parrot denies it all, of course.)

@dangillmor@mastodon.social Even though I would have loved to read this I absolutely refuse to do it on Google or Apple: "Create a free account, or log in. Gain access to limited free articles, news alerts, select newsletters, podcasts and some daily games." FO!!!

@dangillmor@mastodon.social The New York Times describes the effect Google's AI search has on businesses. - Growth Memo found that in about 75 percent of sessions, users never left AI Mode for other sites. - Nilay Patel: “Publishers already face Google Zero, the moment when traffic from Google plummets to nothing.” - Searches are increasingly being performed by A.I. chatbots while the number of people visiting websites is falling. #Google #Search #AI #Business #NYTimes https://archive.ph/fKkH6

@dangillmor@mastodon.social Google in reality was always an enemy of the Internet and the ordinary person. So was their search and the entire SEO industry it created!
