Leiden, the Netherlands, is older than previously thought. The discovery of wooden foundation piles—from which a large tree was felled in the year 650—shows that Leiden is older than previously thought. Leiden is believed to have been founded in the 12th century. Because the Rhine River regularly changed its course, it is suspected that Leiden was flooded between the years 650 and 1200 and was rebuilt in the 12th century.
