Albedo is the portion of incoming sunlight that a surface or planet reflects back to where it came from. A high albedo—whether caused by white roofs or ice-covered seas—keeps things cool.
But here we are, rushing in with our roofs and fields full of solar panels—which actually require a low albedo and thus contribute to the warming of the Earth’s surface. The irony is, you can’t paint them white because then they won’t work anymore.
