For decades, multiple sclerosis existed in an uncomfortable space between what patients experienced and what medicine could explain. Long before MRI scans revealed the characteristic lesions of the disease, people arrived at clinics with numbness, crushing fatigue, blurred vision, pain, and weakness—symptoms that often came and went without an obvious cause. Too often, the conclusion was psychological rather than neurological.

We are six years into the COVID-19 pandemic, yet many of its long-term consequences remain poorly understood. Long Covid is still being defined, its biology is still being mapped, and many people continue to live with symptoms that medicine cannot yet fully explain. In many ways, we have only begun to uncover what the infection leaves behind.
