The Canadian $1 and $2 Coins: Loonie and Toonie On June 30, 1987, Canada introduced the $1 coin featuring a common loon, quickly nicknamed the "Loonie." The original design was supposed to feature the Voyageur, but the master dies were mysteriously lost in transit to Winnipeg.
