@fey@pagan.plus I don't blame you, to be honest. History be damned, potatoes are quite satisfying. I know not every diet would agree, and that's totally fair, but they are calorie dense and extraordinarily valuable to be able to grow yourself.
Have you heard of groundnuts? I think Apis americana is the scientific name -- they're a native North American tuber with extremely nutritious seed pods and a tuber that's a lot like (so I've read) a somewhat drier potato. They like a lot of water, and I *think* would be native to a huge region of the Northeast that probably includes yours. If you have a wet spot on your property, it could be a good no-effort thing to cultivate. I think they're also something like 28% protein by dry weight (that might be the seeds, the tubers are pretty high in protein too though iirc) so they're extremely nutritionally valuable.

@Siiin@pagan.plus yes, I’ve heard of groundnuts & they definitely grow here!! Or at least they’re supposed to; I haven’t stumbled on any. Since they’re a legume with a common name like “groundnut” I feel a little anxious about trying them, as I have a peanut allergy, but I can have literally any other legume so far — I’m sure the reticence is irrational.
