John Boorman, writer/director/producer famous for Deliverance (1972), Zardoz (1974), and Excalibur (1981), was approached to direct this film. Upon reading the screenplay, he "winced repeatedly" and asked BrooksFilms for permission to "overhaul" it.
Mel Brooks was unwilling to delay production and 'fired' Boorman, replacing him with veteran *choreographer* Alan Johnson.
