@ashten@woem.men I think it's basically open a few cases at random, look for water damage, signs something was chewing on the pouches, etc. Then open a few pouches, check for damage to the individual items (plastic layer delaminating, any signs of puncture, funny smells, etc). Then open some of the individual items and taste-test. Items degrade in palatability long before they become unsafe to eat, there's some informal guidance from troops on which items tend to start tasting funny first and so they bias the inspections towards those items.

    @ashten@woem.men the army has standard shelf life guidance that items stored at a given temperature last this many months (unsurprisingly, colder is better) but that's kind of an average across all menu items and some definitely are more shelf stable than others
