He died, and the government is not releasing details so that there is no possibility of a challenge for his position before the summer recess.

No, it’s because if he vacates the seat before 8/3/26 a special election must be held by law. In the normal election, Maise can’t run because he lost his primary In a special election he can run, split the Republican vote out of spite, and a dem gets the senate seat.
