"There's no such thing as a free lunch" and "if it's free, you're the product" are both terrible phrases to live by, because they don't reliably help you identify exploitation, they don't help you understand how the power dynamics of it work either, *and* they erase community organizing in the process. They're only a "good rule of thumb" if you look at them in an extremely narrow context that hasn't existed for most of the time you've been alive
