I analysed my EV roadtrip - Katoomba to Gold Coast, via Sydney Airport, up the M1, then home via Grafton, Armidale, Gloucester. This was the longest roadtrip I’ve done in ~3 years of Model 3 ownership… - 2285 km - $228 spent on energy (almost exactly 10c/km). My key takeaways: 1. Charging was almost entirely easy. Plenty of chargers (while still mostly Superchargers, there are plenty of others now too). The only challenge was Grafton to Armidale, which did require some thought #. 2. The cost saving of an EV mostly evaporates when public charging. I kinda knew this, but this trip confirmed it. Well, except that I’m really driving a sports car, not a Toyota Corolla, so while you can drive a petrol car this cheaply, you can’t drive a car nearly this fun. 3. This roadtrip cost me the equivalent of 10 months of home charging, and that’s before I get solar and battery installed. It’s only road trips where this car costs money to run. # The real problem was that, while the initial estimate was 13% left at Armidale, the road was WAY too much fun to drive in this car, and driving like a person having fun is much more expensive. We made it with 6% and that was fine. #ev
