Being a good example to others is a necessary but not sufficient condition if you want other people to actually do what you think is the right thing or what you want from them. They don't just pick up on your good example because they are so impressed and inspired by it. You also need to tell them directly what you need/want from them, give positive feedback if they do and also tell them very directly if they don't. No sugarcoating! It doesn't work.
