Learning about the meaning of "bad faith" in existentialism - specifically, Sartre's take on it being a self-deception and choice to flee responsibility for one's own choices - and finding that now I know what to look for I see it *everywhere*. Especially in the current discourse around LLMs and tech's impact on society more broadly

The point of most propaganda is not to change what you believe or force a particular point of view on you, but instead to tell you: that thing you know is wrong? There are factors outside of your control. It's not your responsibility that what you're doing is wrong. It's just how the world is. You can keep doing it and that's ok. The propaganda is there to give people *who want to hear it* an intellectual framework for avoiding cognitive dissonance. And many, many people do want to hear it. It's comforting.
