@r1w1s1 I remember those days of trying to figure out the fat X11 textbooks (fairly clearly written I felt, in comparison to the current standard) with fondness. what the heck is the Wayland fracas all about? it's tempting to stick with the old ways

I remember those books too. The X11 documentation was remarkably well written. Wayland has its own goals, but after 42 years X11 is still getting the job done for me every day.
