Reading (too much) AI-news is quite upsetting if you try to square it with observed realities of what people are actually achieving (not much). Here @ludicity@mastodon.sprawl.club assures us that we are not wrong. @bert_hubert@eupolicy.social @ludicity@mastodon.sprawl.club I was annoyed at an exec who was asked - during and "all hand's meeting" - how we measured the claimed 150% productivity boost from our AI tool. He retorted, "I think it's actually higher," and went on to talk about how awesome AI is, without answering the question. After reading this essay I realize that if he's in a line of work where people are claiming 100× improvement, his response is astoundingly conservative and eminently logical. OMG.

In my own work in a university context, I see glimpses of the same mechanisms, thankfully a little less extreme. We haven't reached the token-count yet, nor the firing-the-sceptic stage, but no doubt those will come to us too. We certainly have otherwise sensible colleagues ruthlessly pushing "AI innovations" because it buys them promotion. #noLLM #StopTheAICorruption
