AI may not actually think, but it writes and comments code exactly like a human—to be more specific, a human trapped in a feature factory where good code and sustainable architecture is always “something we’ll fix later,” in a calendar that doesn’t have a month named “Later.”

A certain kind of leader has always resented engineers who prioritize sustainable code that is verifiably correct and extendable at low cost, over code that ships right now and punts problems down the calendar. AI is the perfect product: It does what is asked of it, it does it right now, and provides cover for getting rid of those pesky seniors who have lived through the past consequences of leadership’s choices and seen the costs to everything from morale to revenues and shareholder value.
