23&Me to settle for <$3 per affected person

2026-07-17 14:21 UTC

23andMe agreed to pay $18 million to settle claims over a 2023 data breach affecting 6.9 million users. And that is before the lawyers take most of it. Basically zero consequences for breach of DNA sequences, health reports, ethnicity, race, location, etc. Fascists surely won’t use this for anything horrific.

If it’s any consolation, the CEO is absolutely contrite, and is personally writing out these checks. /s

I was very interested in genetic testing when it first came out, and 23andMe, specifically. And I had privacy concerns, so I never had the testing done. I'm so glad I chose as I did, AND I'm still very interested in knowing. All you privacy concerned Lemmiversians, how would you approach gene testing in a way that maintains privacy, at this time?

23andMe agreed to pay $18 million to settle claims over a 2023 data breach affecting 6.9 million users. I never understood these settlements. Some asshole lawyers get millions and then the real victims get 2 dollars? WTF? How and where is any of this normal? Oh, wait, pet me guess…

When the legal system neither delivers justice not makes people whole after being harmed, people start getting _ideas_. Like taking up plumbing

Our whole family did those spit tests and the only person whose data was compromised was our teenage daughter’s. Bet they liked stealing THAT data didn’t they?! 😡

I used it. I limited all of my ‘social media’ to only show my initials, and nothing personal really. I looked, I wasn’t impacted, but people that used that social media thing to connect with second or third cousins, were. Enabling strongest privacy settings, and sharing as limited data as possible. If you do use it seems to be the best route. I still think potentially at some point they might actually get compromised and all users. I’ll get 1 year free credit monitoring, and $10 bucks then.
