Heh, I came to be reading the Bill of Rights 1688 | New Zealand Legislation and laughed at the language here (my emphasis):
And whereas, the said late King James the Second having abdicated the government, and the throne being thereby vacant, His Highness the Prince of Orange (whom it has pleased Almighty God to make the glorious instrument of delivering this kingdom from Popery and arbitrary power) …
Glorious instrument, indeed!

@Miraz My favourite nonsense along these lines is that Henry VIII was so tickled about the Pope giving him the title of 'Defender of the Faith' that he kept calling himself that after he went protestant, and all his successors to the present still claim it
