We're a relatively flat country, as you must be aware :-)
That makes RF visibility easier.
Mountains make line of sight more difficult.
Antennas with much power (like those >10dBi) make the spread of the signal narrower, therefor ensure further reach.
Antennas with less power have a spread that is large, meaning their reach is not that far but can be seen by more local devices.
