Perhaps, the first thing is to accept differences. To accept that not everything fits in boxes.
Than to see "states" as a spectre not as a binary. (Then you may also come to understanding ADHD and autism.)
And at last, try to separate your own likes from general expectations.
For example: I like (prefer) women in a (what I think) female appearance. But I accept many more kinds of female or male (spectre) appearances. And those are only in my recognition - means: in other eyes they may be recognized totally different.
More words than I intended 😸 but I think, regarding spectres (I hope, I used the word correctly) will make many things easier.
