🥁HOKO-MOCHI🔔
One of the most anticipated sweets of the festival is Kagijin's (かぎ甚) 'hoko-mochi' (鉾餅). Available only in July, the sweet resembles the roof covering of the Naginata-hoko (長刀鉾), the first float to parade in the Gion Matsuri.

The Naginata-hoko (長刀鉾) always leads the Gion Matsuri's Saki-no-Matsuri (先祭り), the first and largest of the 2 parades. The float's name comes from the long halberd that rises from its roof to drive away evil. Nowadays it is the only float upon which a sacred page ('chigo') rides.
