I find the stuff on relevance dry and fairly boring but I took strongly to William Perry's scheme of intellectual and ethical development. It doesn't tell you want to do in class; it merely describes levels of epistemic engagement and the motivations that go with them. It's so much easier to accommodate students whom you have some way to understand and empathise with. Then there's Ed Deci and Rich Ryan's self-determination theory, specifically the part about intrinsic motivation. Incredibly powerful.
