Linux (the kernel) is completely uninteresting to me as a technology. The only interesting thing about it is that it serves as a foundation for other projects to build on top of it, for the purposes of empowerment and liberation. My computing devices do my bidding, not the bidding of others whose interests are counter to mine. Plus, I love the feeling of building software as a community. That the tools we're making benefit not just the people building them, but everyone, and that anyone can make a difference and shape the future. We have to actively work to address the fact that some people are privileged and have a louder voice than others, but equality is an ideal we have to work toward. For me, the social and political aspects of the free desktop are the entire point.
