as I proofread this shit, I'm reading this in Gunnery Sergeant Hartmann's voice from Heartbreak Ridge. I recomend you do the same. Turns out, [one of] the monitoring system[s] from $weCantSellFiber still exists. The company has been split multiple ways, and at least one network has been outright abandoned. This is what happens when tech talent leaves. The people left behind lack the skills, courage, or authority to change "anything". I feel so bad for my Second Banana. He could have fixed this, he could have cleaned this up. I guarentee he was not allowed to do shit. And that is another problem when senior techs leave.... we won't tolerate this shit. We'll just fucking fix it. Second Banana was a good kid..... but he was still a kid. He didn't have the time in grade to get away with fixing it now, getting forgiveness later. He's got a mortgage payment to make. No, this was not the monitoring system I ran. This was the shitty, useless one I ignored. I had sufficient resources to run what I needed elsewhere. I wasn't allowed to fix this garbage when I worked there, so I worked around it. Made me a fucking legend, my ability to be the first on top of damn near any issue. The shit system was LibreNMS, and it was basically a giant ping machine. My system was nagios and mrtg. I ran useful checks, like OSPF adjecencies, interface states, and service availablity. It's not the fucking tool, it's how you use it. Improvise, adapt, overcome.
