@PaulBusch@cosocial.ca Before whipped votes a party gave candidates a home for their political philosophy, and MPs could freely vote against party policy if it was bad for their riding or not supported by the riding. After whipped votes the party is now the only thing that matters, not the ridings or the will of the electorate. With whipped voting we only get a say every 4 years, whereas before whipped votes we had responsive MPs. So whether parties are good for democracy depends on how democratic the system, and Canada's democracy has been terribly undermined by neoliberalism and is much more authoritarian than before the harper cons started whipping votes (which the neoliberals then ran with).
