it doesn't make any sense. linux and the gpl have no technical reason to exist. one could've just bought a copy of unix, right? oh, some people couldn't afford unix, or wanted a bit more control about their own computers? "well that's a you problem" or what. remember the bill gates borg memes in the 1990s? remember "linux is a cancer"? but now it's totally fine to get assimilated by anthropic, which is the new microsoft btw. hello mcfly, anybody home?

@mntmn@mastodon.social Even for people wanting a unix-like operating system free of charge in the mid-1990s, FreeBSD was an objectively better alternative. But a lot of really good programmers chose Linux for political reasons, and made it better. I still run FreeBSD on my home server. I have considered switching because it would make things easier with docker and systemd, but by now I'm kind of happy I haven't.

@mntmn@mastodon.social I think the youths don't appreciate the sense in which the early internet was about *emancipation*. It seems like they all prefer the chains now.
