I grew up being told stories about how hard it is to engineer and manufacture an incandescent bulb that’s bright and has longevity. It is, of course, all bullshit. Light bulb manufacturers are, as far as I know, the origin of the entire concept of “planned obsolescence” and the commonplace collusion of corporate cretins.

@djsundog@fedi.reclaim.technology You can make a light bulb last forever but it won't really make any useful light. If you are really interested in this, Alec from Technology Connections went into a lot of the whys about it but the conclusion is pretty much that physics dictate the most useful light to lifespan trade-off https://youtu.be/zb7Bs98KmnY?si=H_-Ar-02uHZEM9-M

  • Wikipedia’s article on planned obsolescence reaches for the automotive industry as the source, but the article on the Phoebus cartel makes me feel like light bulb bastards deserve the hit. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phoebus_cartel
