that is, visual/auditory cues aren't there, so one has to read harder, or guess, at all the things we normally put in a bucket called 'tone.' (otoh, the work of producing/parsing cues goes away too. i think most people find meetings all day tiring partly for that reason.) there are some tools to send signals, like writing style and emoji, but they're lower bandwidth
