Remembers Hyperloop? High speed trains in low pressure tubes. Didn't violate any physical laws, promised speeds of 1000+km/h. There was so much excitement, test tracks where built, multiple companies started. Venture capital, universities, all got involved. A small number of people argued against it, pointing out that it could be destroyed in moments, the engineering wasn't close, it was massively costly and impractical.
