@cflynnbooks@mastodonapp.uk @mrundkvist@archaeo.social I’m a perfectly average person who never went to universities and my country uses the metric system because when my country was founded they just took what was being pushed as the global standard my country is in East Asia and is barely over a hundred years old my country is, by majority, Chinese people. we’ve inherited everything except for the units. we have had a rich history of our own measurement system. we abandoned it. that wasn’t about being smart, that was about “we’re not the world powers, everyone else is adopting this new thing, let’s just use it because we won’t be able to enforce our own system” it has never been about being smart
