The Chinese companies aren't even copying by doing the same stuff - they're copying models by using the American ones with very directed prompts to essentially distill, say, Fable 5, with just a few hundred thousand prompts, into a smaller, faster model. It's akin to running a bakery, having a super well selling product, and the competition rolling in and buying up 70-80% of your daily volume just to reverse the recipe, then they'll be selling an "improved" version at 10-20% the cost within a few weeks.
