@bweller@mstdn.social I was just talking to my wife about this this morning, but reading your thread reminded me of a radio play adaptation of Country Of The Blind by HG Wells. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Country_of_the_Blind I might be misremembering, but in the production I heard, the main character hit his head and fell unconscious, and when he woke up he found the doctors had removed his eyes because they were "deformed," i.e. normal sized. The story is clearly about the ignorant enforcing conformity, but I hadn't thought about it for a long time. The lense of allistics saying "it's polite to lie to people's faces" certainly puts a new spin on the story for me.
