I found out about gas stations being hazardous waste sites when I talked to a local political hack about all the vacant lots downtown. Every square foot of commercial and retail zoned land was getting snapped up and revitalized with new construction - except for certain corner lots at key intersections. Turned out they were former gas stations, long since demolished, and that the bankrupt original owners could not be sued to recoup the costs of hazardous waste cleanup so any new owner would be on the hook - so there would never be a new owner unless some naive foreigner inadvertantly bought in.
