Friends, people of the Fediverse, Please vow never to use rat poison. I just saw a squirrel carried a blue cake of rat poison up the honeylocust tree in our condo yard. The squirrel will only nibble a little, discard and drop it somewhere, where any child/pet/wildlife can reach and … . We collectively do have the power to make this realm a kinder place for all living being. Thank you. 🫶💚 #ratpoison #squirrel #rats #birds

@otterX@mindly.social ngl I'm always at a loss for this stuff. I do some farm work occasionally and it's a really hard problem to solve. (Not with rats in particular, no grain stores of this farm and plenty of cats, probably plenty of snakes too) But deer are a massive problem so are aphids and weeds. And managing that stuff without causing ecological havoc in an affordable and scalable way... Idk how too, lol. I really do wish more people would talk about this stuff tho.

@otterX@mindly.social Any animal that eats that squirrel will also be poisoned.

@otterX@mindly.social this is especially true in the UK where a lot of the rat population is already immune to the over the counter poisons, so all you are really doing is feeding them.

@otterX@mindly.social any cat, bird, fox, weasel, raccoon, opossum or dog (etc) eating a mouse that ate rat poison will also die. I use mouse trap personally, and will never switch to poison.
