Publishers have proved time and time and time again that they can’t be trusted to keep that download available to you after you’ve handed the money over.

I don’t think it matters for this discussion. As long as I can download the files once, that’s fine. Just like if I bought a disc: once I take possession of it, I need to manage it. I don’t expect that I can walk into a store 5 years later and just get another physical disc, so why would I expect that with a file? I need to take care of them myself. That said even though they are not publishers, GOG, Steam, and humble bundle have been pretty good about keeping things available long after i bought them. I can still pull my whole humble bundle catalog (and soundtracks) down with a script.
