@iagox86@infosec.exchange @DaveMWilburn@infosec.exchange IME if you don't have irrefutable proof of ownership (receipts with serial numbers or the like), the police and the courts will be useless at best, and will likely create new problems.
Inventive community solutions usually cover the most ground for things like this. With some light detective work you can see if your communities overlap in some way, and/or you can involve their community. Depending on the situation, and with a bit of creativity, the person's neighbors, friends, teammates, coworkers, and family may be very useful here.
