of course the alba, as a poetic form, is all about denying mortality (the only challenge to Donne and his lover's eternal unity—"nothing else is"—is the sun's "rags of time"—"hours, days, months"). and the tragedy of the Borg imo is that their/its desire for freedom from death requires the total annihilation of all individual difference. hence maybe Q's obsession with Picard, who—as Locutus—was offered the chance to stay in bed, but instead chooses to heed the lark

of course i just remembered that Tithonus was the lover of Eos, the goddess of dawn—the same Tithonus to whom Zeus gave immortality but not eternal youth. a pretty clear lesson for mortals about the dangers of trying to live outside time. but still (according to Propertius), Eos "despised [Tithonus] not, nor suffered him to lie lonely in the chambers of the East.... [W]hen nigh Ind she laid her down to rest in his embrace she made moan that the day returned too soon"
