If companies were limited in the amount of profit they could enjoy, then they would have no motive to amplify the dark patterns of consumption, to drive habitual behaviours and dependency, or to monopolize markets.
But we will never have the courage to set such limits, or even make them culturally repugnant. Exploiting each other is a key feature of our particular European heritage—perfected by the USA, and exported world-wide.
