@hakona@im.alstadheim.no I think the idea was that if government taxes people and then subsidizes public transit, fewer people would need cars (and thus have car payments). It seems somewhat reasonable in urbanized areas. I was able to get along without a car as a teenager in the 90s (in a town of 5000), although having one would have made my commute a lot shorter.
