They use a magnetic system like a lab stirrer which drives an impeller through two layers of plastic. Zero chance of a failure putting electric current in the water. The water tank is translucent (so you can see the level), and it has a water level sensor. I got a spare impeller and pump housing. Any time the water gets low, I swap them and put the ones which were in the tank into my dishwasher. Easy.
