@kojoidrissa@fosstodon.org AIUI Bluesky doesn’t want it, but an increasing number of countries and US states are making it legally mandatory. So if they think you’re located someplace where those laws apply, they do this.
Same thing with some of their mod services: they will auto subscribe you to certain legally-required ones based on where they think you are.

@kojoidrissa@fosstodon.org Some Fedi instances are basically hoping they’ll be too small for anyone to bother prosecuting, but that feels very risky to me given some of the legal penalties being set up around this stuff.
