From The Telegraph in 2016:
The editor of The Archers has disclosed he has set in motion a ‘titanic struggle’ between two of its most popular characters ahead of his departure later this month.
Fans of the famously sedate soap opera are still be reeling from the sensational plot that led to Helen Archer stabbing her abusive partner in their kitchen.
But that hasn’t stopped Sean O’Connor putting in train a new battle, this time involving Brian and Jennifer Aldridge.
In an interview to mark the end of his tenure as Archer’s editor, Mr O’Connor described the upcoming story line as a “titanic struggle” that revolves around the coming of age of Brian’s illegitimate son Ruairi, the product of his extra-marital affair with Siobhan Hathaway.
Outgoing Archers editor reveals new 'titanic struggle' plot line for Aldridge family
It will be another Archer’s slow burner. Ruairi does not turn 18 for another five years but Mr O’Connor said the plot will revolve the inheritance of the Aldridges’ 1,500 acre Home Farm in the fictional town of Ambridge.
Brian Aldridge, it seems, is planning for Ruairi to take control in preference to Jennifer’s son Adam Macy, born in 1967 after his mother scandalised the village by getting pregnant out of wedlock.
The Aldridges have one child together Kate, a sometime feckless hippy. Mr O’Connor told The Guardian: “Brian always wanted a son, he doesn’t want his wife’s lovechild [Adam], who happens to be gay.
“Brian’s Lear-like positioning of Ruairi is going to be one of the great shows of the future.”
So here we are . . . Shame the writer did not know that Ambridge is a village and that Kate has a sister.
