Not bad taste, because at least "bad taste" indicates a genuine preference for some style or other, it indicates thought and choice. He has NO taste. He doesn't care how it looks in an aesthetic sense, he has no such sensibility. He just knows that gold is an indicator of wealth and success. He just cares that gold looks expensive.
