@julian one of the issues is a large number of unattended federating services with open registration, or attended but no interest in restricting registration, or specifically set-up to create spam accounts - compounded by open federation by all others. Half the spam reports I send are to bouncing emails of admins that are no longer present, or on-network accounts that are not monitored. But out of the box, most software freely federates with all these services.

    @julian Separately we are seeing a large uptick in human-ish responses to registration gates, either cut and pasted responses from other sources, or LLM-generated. These are happening at the well-managed providers, who are used to querying their registration queues, and are now dealing with an increasing amount of almost-believable or highly believable reasons for joining and account appeals

    @iftas@mastodon.iftas.org that's true too. On the receiving end it's hard to judge whether allowlist federation is the right move. Could be something in the middle is the solution. Filter/queue activities from unknown instances until an arbitrary number of activities have been cleared by the local admin.
