I’d mostly seen maps that showed Hawaii a couple of hundred miles from California and thought that’s where it was until I looked on a world map. They put a little box around them to show that they’ve been moved, but that doesn’t convey that Hawaii was moved further than the width of the map. The same happens on a much smaller scale on this side of the pond. Maps of the UK that include the Channel Islands (which are very close to the coast of France) tend to put them in a little box near Plymouth. I assumed growing up that the reason they were British was because they much closer to Britain than France, which is not even slightly true.
