So far, I see Matrix is heralded as the closest thing to Discord that there is right now.
Is it something I can self-host (paying someone else to take care of it) like I do with my masto server? (haven't seen that on a quick duckduckgo search)
any other alternatives?

I have no idea what this means: I mean, I get the managed homeserver (too expensive for me) but what's that 30€ yearly other thing?
