This kind of non-sequitur statement belongs, I think, in the same family as arguments like "all lives matter." They’re true, of course. But why say them in this context? Could it be… possibly… to shut down people who are trying desperately to say something about their experience? ⬇️

For arguments sake: Imagine there's an area with a species of little yellow frog, that can't cope if certain chemicals go into the water. And then there are plentiful bullfrogs there, who can. Little yellow frog says, "Help me! I'm a little yellow frog. My skin means I'm extra-sensitive, so I'll suffer." I say, "You're a frog." ⬇️

@KatyElphinstone@mas.to "We're all neurodiverse!" Is to the neurodivergent, the same as "all lives matter" is to those oppressed by racist police. In both cases, people are harmed by systemic institutions. And some push back against those harms. Both slogans convey we should keep the status quo because everyone struggles with these institutions. It's a lack of curiosity and trying to understand the harms. What I experience as a black man isn't what you experience. But, I can learn. I can let your troubles affect my energy and use that to motivate me to affect change. Which is, I think, the opposite of what these responses want. They suck the energy out of change by nullifying there's a problem to solve.
